VACCINATION SCHEDULES
 For
DOGS and CATS

Due to improvements in the newer vaccines, recommendations
for vaccinating puppies and dogs have changed. Some
veterinarians may vary the vaccination schedule based on the
incidence of disease in their geographical area, and breed or
health of the animal. For the majority of puppies and dogs, the
following is recommended.

DOGS

CATS

 AGE:

Vaccination:

  5 weeks

Parvovirus

  6, 9 weeks

Combination vaccine without Leptospirosis

  12, 15 weeks

Combination vaccine with Leptospirosis

  Adult

(Annual Booster)

Combination vaccine with Leptospirosis

*A combination vaccine includes Adenovirus Cough and Hepatitis (the inclusion of either Adenovirus-1 or Adenovirus-2 in a vaccine will protect against both diseases), Distemper, Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus.  Some may also include Coronavirus.

Puppies that are in kennels or breeding facilities, live where Parvo is a problem, or in other ways are at high risk for exposure to Parvovirus should receive a Parvovirus vaccination at 5 weeks of age.

NOTE: Leptospirosis is a relatively rare disease that affects few dogs. Today, most people give combination vaccines without Leptospirosis to puppies (younger than 12 weeks). In the latter portion of the puppy's vaccination schedule, vaccines with Leptospirosis are used to protect against this disease.

Where Coronavirus is a concern - vaccinate at 6, 9, 12, and 15 weeks.

Where Lyme disease is a problem, or if the animal is traveling to an area where Lyme disease occurs, vaccinate at 12 and 15 weeks, then yearly.

Dogs and puppies should receive Rabies vaccinations according to local law by your veterinarian.

  AGE:

Vaccination:

  6, 9, 12, 15 weeks

Distemper, Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus

  1 year

Distemper, Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus

  2 years

PLEASE NOTE: according to the American Association of Feline Practitioners, cats at low risk of disease exposure may not need to be boostered yearly for most diseases. adult cats kept 100% indoors with no possibility of contact with other cats may be boostered every other year for certain diseases. It is recommended that cats that are likely to be exposed to others by going outside, showing, boarding, breeding, etc., should receive yearly boosters.

For those desiring protection against FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis), it is recommended that vaccinations be at 16 and 19 weeks of age, then regularly thereafter.

Rabies vaccination according to local law by your veterinarian.

Where Chlamydia (Pneumonitis) is a concern, it is recommended that vaccinations be given at 9, 12, and 15 weeks of age.

For cats at risk of exposure to Feline Leukemia Virus, it is recommended to vaccinate kittens at 12 and 15 weeks, at 1 year, then at one-year intervals thereafter.
